De Soto - Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant

The Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant was built in 1942 by the U.S. government near De Soto in northwest Johnson County to produce smokeless powder and propellants for small arms and artillery. When built, the 9,065-acre plant was the world’s largest such plant. It was active over four separate timespans between 1942 and 1992, producing a total of more than 510 million pounds of propellants. At its height more than 12,000 people worked there, and about 1,100 structures remain standing.
